Christmas Eve According to Jesus
Christmas Eve According to Jesus
Psalm 40
1 I waited patiently for the Lord;
he inclined to me and heard my cry.
2 He drew me up from the pit of destruction,
out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock,
making my steps secure.
3 He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the Lord.
4 Blessed is the man who makes the Lord his trust,
who does not turn to the proud,
to those who go astray after a lie!
5 You have multiplied, O Lord my God,
your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us;
none can compare with you!
I will proclaim and tell of them, yet they are more than can be told.
6 In sacrifice and offering you have not delighted,
but you have given me an open ear.
Burnt offering and sin offering you have not required.
7 Then I said, “Behold, I have come;
in the scroll of the book it is written of me:
8 I delight to do your will, O my God;
your law is within my heart.”
9 I have told the glad news of deliverance in the great congregation;
behold, I have not restrained my lips, as you know, O Lord.
10 I have not hidden your deliverance within my heart;
I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation;
I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness
from the great congregation.
11 As for you, O Lord, you will not restrain
your mercy from me;
your steadfast love and your faithfulness will
ever preserve me!
12 For evils have encompassed me beyond number;
my iniquities have overtaken me, and I cannot see;
they are more than the hairs of my head; my heart fails me.
13 Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me!
O Lord, make haste to help me!
14 Let those be put to shame and disappointed altogether
who seek to snatch away my life;
let those be turned back and brought to dishonor
who delight in my hurt!
15 Let those be appalled because of their shame
who say to me, “Aha, Aha!”
16 But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you;
may those who love your salvation
say continually, “Great is the Lord!”
17 As for me, I am poor and needy,
but the Lord takes thought for me.
You are my help and my deliverer;
do not delay, O my God!

Christmas Eve Traditions
Do you have Christmas Eve traditions? For several years now, our family has gathered with church friends to assemble and deliver gift baskets to people in town out working on Christmas Eve. Early Christians were known for performing what they called “deeds of love” on Christmas, and this is one way we take a shot at it. That night, we sing carols by candlelight at our Christmas Eve service, which is one of our favorite events of the season. It caps a fun but also demanding month of activity and ministry, so we’re all happy to go home afterward for a relaxed meal, usually with my parents or others joining us. I might read “Twas the Night Before Christmas,” or one of the best parts of A Christmas Carol. Then it’s off to bed, everyone excited for what the morning holds.
This year, I plan to work in a review of Psalm 40 and Hebrews 10:1–12, just like we discussed yesterday. After all, this is the Bible’s version of “’Twas the Night Before Christmas.” Why not take a few moments to reflect on what it meant for the Eternal Son of God to offer himself for service on the first Christmas Eve? Then, respond:

Then, respond:
Rejoice!
If you have trusted Jesus, the King has drawn you out of the miry bog of your sin and brokenness. He has destroyed the power of the devil over you and delivered you from the fear of death. He has set your feet on solid ground! Your position is stable and secure before him, and now you can pursue and recover the life he made you for! Whatever trouble might still be lurking in your life right now, don’t lose sight of what God has done for you in Christ! Let him put a new song in your mouth, a song of praise to your God (40:3)! Maybe you can even belt out some of those old Christmas carols with fresh gratitude at a Christmas Eve service, or right there in your home. Testify to someone else about the grace of the God of Christmas.
Rest!
By grace, Jesus’ faithful life has been given to you. None of us has ever offered our lives up to God in perfect obedience like Jesus did. But by faith in Christ, his holiness, consecration, fidelity—is credited to us! God has replaced our sorry record of disobedience, half-hearted commitment and inconsistent devotion with the impeccable righteousness of Jesus. This is what the Bible means when it says that we are “justified” by faith in Jesus. The more I see how shabby my own righteousness is, the more grateful I am that God has wrapped me in the righteousness of his Son.
Reflect!
How faithful God has been to you through the years! In Psalm 40, David is drawing on the memory of God’s past rescue (1–3) during a present hardship (11–17). He’s in trouble again. He’s overwhelmed again. He’s sinned and blown it again. But looking back at how God saved him back then prompts faith and hope that God will do the same for him right now. Let this be your model on this Christmas Eve. Whatever your current trials, let the memory of God’s previous mercies to you prompt fresh confidence in him. God’s track record of faithfulness is unimpeachable. Trust him.
Recommit!
God pulled us out of the mire that we might follow the example of our King. Why not echo Jesus’ own Christmas Eve prayer? God, I don’t want to bring you empty sacrifices by going through the religious motions this Christmas. Dig for me an open ear that listens to your Word. Give me a heart that is humble and obedient before you. Give me a body that is available to your service. You are worthy of all this and more! For the glory of your Son, the King, Amen.
